Kevin Smith: Too Fat for 40 review

Kevin Smith: Too Fat for 40
You rated this movie: 3 of 5 stars

With all the 1-star reviews how did this average 3.6? Anyway, I've seen him do these Q&A's before much better than this one, which in fact only allowed for ONE question 20 minutes into it, and the rest was answering by going around the world 1st, self-indulgent to the point even the audience was bored. He started by promising THIS time he was going to talk about what THEY wanted to hear, it would be all about their Q's, then does the opposite.

I love Kevin Smith films & his previous Q&A's were hilariously fun, so this one is a major disappointment. His hero worship of Willis to the point of letting Willis scare him on set, is sad, as is the 20 minute joke about taking a dump while stoned, and pretty much becoming a stoner at 38 as he puts it. I don't expect clean comedy nor do I want it, but a bit of balance and some sense of direction as well as delivering the promise he made to his audience, would have been the least to expect. Pass on this one.

Bob & Tom: Comedy All Stars Tour review

Bob & Tom: Comedy All Stars Tour

You rated this movie: 4 of 5 stars

I'd never heard the radio show, so not hearing more than the starting intro by them was no disappointment to me. The comedians were pretty darned good, took me by surprise--didn't read reviews 1st, which is a good thing because they are way funnier than these reviews make them sound & I think it's more sour grapes that the radio duo didn't do a set, than it is a fair review of the actual comedians in this film. To me the 1st comedian (black guy) was the funniest, each got at least one belly laugh out of me which is rare, some got several, to me that's nearly a buy since newcomers or new-to-me comics rarely get me laughing as much as these did. However, there were some really awkward moments where some jokes fell flat or were a bit overdone, or too dry--only the comedian seemed to get them. All in all I'd definitely recommend seeing this whether renting or buying or live show, worth the time and belly exercises :)

Relatively clean, some audience members had young children with them, this was not BET style comedy & don't believe any was crude or obscene, kind of surprising I got so many laughs from such a clean performance, because I tend to enjoy raunchier stuff, so this is safe for families with a few minor swears, and one MAJOR swear word (c*nt), that may turn some off.

Review: Russell Brand in New York City

Russell Brand in New York City
1st, the video was out of focus when other cameras focused on him; 2nd, there were commercial interruptions for HIM, every 60-90 seconds; 3rd, all swears were bleeped; 4th, the last 5 minutes was him trying to get laid (as if he has to try?). So the supposed 42 minutes was more like 25 actual minutes. More than half on hate mail, the rest on MTV awards which was funny but not as a main bit for the whole show. I love Brand's work, and his looks & style, I want to see more stand up by him before I give him up as hopeless as a stand up comedian. Glad he's so much better in movies, though he would disagree--apparently he was so bad in Sarah movie they had to cut all his action scenes (surfing, horse riding, etc). I'd truly like to see what made him so famous in England because it's NOT translating here at all. So I can't recommend this, I surprised myself by staying through it all as it is.

Review of Bill Engvall: Aged and Confused stand-up comedy special

Bill Engvall: Aged and Confused
You rated this movie: 5
Hilarious! Took some warming up, but that's generally how all stand-up's start, to get a feel for the audience & customize their material for them. I loved this show as much or more than any of his others, and all new material as well, which is always a plus! Nothing I hate worse than repeat material. Nothing offensive, kids could see this, but they might not GET some of the humor, no swears or detailed sex stuff. Some crude humor about farting but that was ROTFLMFAO funny! The kids will love that, & the 10 yr old boy on the bus fight, lol. Everyone of all ages can relate to most of these anecdotes, though more focused on aging as the title promises, anyone expecting different didn't read the title or description! Not sure why unrated, this is easily G-rated. I've loved Engvall (and White most of the BCCT group--although Jeff got me started on it) in all he does, love comedy that lets us laugh at our own foibles.

Review of Latin Divas of Comedy

Latin Divas of Comedy
You rated this movie: 4 Stars
4 stars because they were very funny, minus a star because both Reymundo as a MAN hosting a Diva's and a bad host--no funny, just here they are. And second because I didn't laugh out loud more than once. I'm hard to surprise into laughs though, so 4 stars instead of the 3 it may have deserved. Martinez did jokes about her weight, the lesbian did jokes about--what else--being gay, Sara was very funny despite the cigs vs. milk thing (that reviewer has no sense of humor), and Monique did an advice show instead of comedy. The show opened with a sexy latin male singer and a sexy male violin player, ended with same. Reymundo always opens his shows with music, perhaps because he never has any new material, unfortunately. Almost didn't watch because of him, but glad I did because the women were better than he's ever been on his own. Martinez was best because she really didn't care what anyone thought of her. Recommend renting, not buying.

Review of Problem Child: Leslie Jones Stand-up Comedian

Problem Child: Leslie Jones

She's funny as hell, rude, crude & socially unacceptable, the way I like them. The 4 stars is because of the last 10 minutes when she badgered audience members & hit them on the head with her mic, seeming clueless how much that hurts the head. She said it was her fav part of the show too, guess she really does hate pretty women, lol. Really enjoyed her sex jokes, the single women aspects, and how a good man and good peter don't always--or often--come in same package, but the best bits were the climactic--literally--mimes all over the stage floor & on a stage hand's head. Also made fun of herself, her height & shoe size among other things. Definitely would see her again, maybe even this show again--worth buying perhaps. Obviously those who don't like the F-word, sex, climaxes and "dirty" talk, avoid this show--we don't need to hear your complaints & moral judgement's as if you didn't know what the show was like before watching. I love BET quality comedians.

Review of Alex Reymundo: Red-Nexican

Alex Reymundo: Red-Nexican
Ron White describes him well, a Mexican who looks Indian & talks like a Redneck. Show sprinkled with plenty of naughty & nice spanish, hilarious throughout, I laughed harder in the last 15 minutes than the 45 minutes before them. This is not advertised as family friendly, audience full of adults, no reason anyone should expect political correctedness in comedy, nor was his show full of F-bombs, like many comedians overuse for laughs. He even makes fun of the fact that there's no pretty way to say some things, his attempts are all the funnier. The audience present during taping loved him as much as I did watching, and he had a tough crowd to please in Missouri. I'd easily recommend this to anyone wanting a ton of laughs, worth every minute of the show.

Review of Doug Stanhope: No Refunds

Doug Stanhope: No Refunds

This is R-rated for a reason, anyone going into this with easily offended sensibilities is just not taking responsibility for the choice they made to see an R rated comedy film. There's nothing X-rated here either--we're all adults, as is his audience; if we can't be honest adults, if we can't laugh at our own ridiculous beliefs & behaviors, such a one doesn't belong at a comedy show. Just because he is a Libertarian does not mean he has to represent his belief 100% of the time, do YOU??? I can compare him to Bill Maher & George Carlin, an intelligent brain that educates & stimulates as he entertains. He got a standing ovation both at the show & in these reviews, so he's obviously doing something right, saying what we need to hear, and I laughed my a$$ off throughout, while nodding & agreeing, admiring his brilliant perspective, so many times wondering "how come I never thought of that", I can't wait to see everything he has ever done now.

Review of Bill Hicks: Sane Man

Bill Hicks: Sane Man

This was my 1st viewing of Hicks, I got past the production stuff easily not knowing what the usual would be for his stuff, the 1st part of the show was the funniest to me, the 2nd half much slower. It seemed he was really reaching for material towards the end, prolonging the punchlines way too long, such as the hairy butt porn stereotype, then the Reagan butt humping, as well as the Elvis impersonations, all went on way longer than necessary for the joke & made me feel as if I were indulging him, waiting for it to get better, because the reviews were so good. He's not as good as Stanhope, not as intelligent or keen; not once watching Stanhope did I look at the clock to see how much time was left, as I did during Hicks' show. I plan to watch the rest of Hicks material here because he is one of the greats, he's just not the comedy god he's made out to be here. Definitely in the top 10% just not the 1%, if he'd lived perhaps he would have reached that pinnacle. Still worth watching.

Review of Joe Rogan: Live

Joe Rogan: Live
My only complaint was the camera work--jerking around & slow-motion stuff during the last 20+ minutes were a serious distraction. Rogan's show is fantastic, along the lines of Stanhope, Hicks, Carlin & the other great fearless & smart comedians. I can see his Hick's influences too clearly though--in the jet fighter story & the snorting wolf noises into the mic, classic Hicks. I like crude, in your face, intelligent, no holds barred comedy, and someone who can make one laugh at oneself is priceless, to expose our own ridiculousness in a new light, those are what the great comedians are known for, what makes them so funny. People who didn't like this are probably those who can't laugh at their own stupidity, or their own fallibility, or who can't tolerate questioning their rigid belief systems for fear they might collapse. This is definitely for adults, not easily offended, who can take a bit of soul searching, and laugh at the results. Highly recommend this. I'd never seen Rogan before, now I'll want all his shows.
